New Projects Announced for October, November, December

Thanks to our fantastic crafters, over 40 pink projects will be donated this week to the American Cancer Society's Hope Lodge in New York! We are grateful for everyone's attention to our deadline so that our projects can be distributed in time for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Below are our new projects to benefit The Doe Fund, and its "Boys in Blue" for the Ready, Willing and Able program, whose mission is to develop and implement cost-effective, holistic programs that meet the needs of a diverse population working to break the cycles of homelessness, addiction, and criminal recidivism.

These projects will be due January 20, 2012.

Hello everybody,

How are your baby toys coming along? We would like to know how you’re faring with your projects. With the summer heat upon us, perhaps knitting or crocheting are coming along slower than you thought?

We need to know how much progress you have made and whether you have materials left over. Both knit patterns should provide enough yarn for two (2) projects; if you have completed one, please make sure to return any unused yarn to our meeting next Friday, June 17th.

We have plenty of crochet Bunny Binkie Blanket kits remaining which we would like to put to best use as well as your leftover yarn from the knitting projects. (There are no extra knitting kits remaining.)

Hello hello ...

It seems that Spring delayed its arrival. We had snow on the ground this morning!

A little note from the studio shall not be delayed.

We received 39 scarves for the Red Scarf Project! How exciting and thank you all so much!

We'll be sending them out to the Orphan Foundation of America very shortly, so if you have any unfinished projects, please contact Ashley soon so that your project isn't left behind.

I have some notes about our meeting last Friday. It always flies by in a blur. You know that you can reach me via email or even call me if you need help outside of our meeting time.

For the crochet hat double check your length measurement so that the hat is not itty bitty. If needed adjust the number of stitches in the base chain. The base chain length should be between 6 and 7 inches, some of that goes into the topping!

Remember that the crochet booties have their inside as our outside. I thought it was prettier that way. If in doubt turn it around and look that it looks like our green ones.

If you are trying the legwarmers, a good way to judge the halfway amount is to weigh the skein as you move along, you want to use half the skein per legwarmer. You can also start the second legwarmer from the other end of the skein and work it out that way. Trust your judgement and make the best use of the skein.

For the Aviatrix hat at least one person was a tad short on yarn for a larger size. Hold tight, you will have enough of the same dyelot next time. If you are in the neighborhood you can check in with Ashley to pick up some more yarn. We will also have the same projects in April, so you might hold until then.

And last but not least another refresher on the wrap and turn gig of the Aviatrix hat. This is how I do it! Follow the instructions as given to the stitch that you need to wrap. Take the yarn to the opposite side of where it is, slip the stitch from the left needle as if to purl (from the back to the front), return the yarn to where it was, return the stitch to the left needle, turn your work around. If you have turned correctly the yarn is where it needs to be to work the following row. This works whether you are wrapping a knit or a purl stitch. Memorize this and hear me saying it to you over and over, it works every time. Be methodical about it and you'll get it. For this hat there is no need to hide the wrap when working it off once you come back over it.

Red Scarves due March 18; March / April Projects Announced!

We collected over a dozen completed projects at February's meeting, and are looking forward to sending FIFTY scarves to the Orphan Foundation of America!

If you took a kit in January or February with any of the four (4) scarf patterns, please make sure to return them by our next meeting on Friday, March 18. We'll be sending them out to the charity soon after. We gave out fifty kits, and are hoping to send a record number of projects to give a real boost to our 2011 season.

Now, onto project #2: our baby accessories to benefit LYFE: Living for the Young Family through Education. We will again have two (2) crochet options and two (2) knit options. Make sure to purchase or bring your needles as we will not have an inventory in stock for sale on site.

We had a great Brown Bag Social last week, thanks to everyone for hanging out with Ina and Sarah! Let's make our goal of 100 washcloths for Baby Buggy!

Another washcloth pattern has been found on Melanie Falick's website, see link above, and splurge on a skein of cotton chenille! See link to the left for the classic Crystal Palace Cotton Chenille at Jimmy Bean Wool.

A REMINDER ABOUT FINISHING: If you do not know how to properly weave in the two ends of the washcloth, please bring the piece to the next Brown Bag Social. Ina and Sarah will be on hand to quickly show you how to weave in the ends on both corners. Then you'll have this skill for life!

A REMINDER ABOUT YARN SUBSTITUTION: Please do not substitute acrylic yarn for the washcloth project! Use the cotton yarn we've provided, Lily Sugar 'n Cream, or purchase a cotton blend like Lion Brand's Cotton-Ease. I will not accept any washcloths made from acrylic yarn!

PATTERNED WASHCLOTHS FOR BABY BUGGY

We're finally announcing our fall project! We're making washcloths out of soft cotton for our babies at Baby Buggy.

There are many patterns on the web and I've posted some links to free and downloadable patterns on the left. Instead of posting the patterns, we are creating KNIT & CROCHET pattern booklets. They will be available at this weeks BROWN BAG SOCIAL this Friday.

About the yarn, I've purchased 75 skeins of Lily Sugar 'n Cream cotton yarn in a variety of colors. For both crocheters and knitters, you'll get two washcloths out of a single skein. We're giving each member only one skein.

I would like to encourage each member to buy 1, 2 or 3 skeins of this yarn (aprox. $2 per skein at Michaels) or choose another "kitchen" cotton like Lion Brand's Cotton Ease which is a little more expensive (approx. $5.50 per skein) but has better yardage. You'll get 3, possibly 4 washcloths out of one skein. I've posted some links at the left.

You need three tools: needles or hooks, scissors and a "chibi" needle for weaving in the ends. Needle and hook sizes vary, so bring a variety if you're staying for the BBS this Friday.

WE'RE TOO POPULAR!

Wow, our tables were full 10 minutes before the event started! Great day everyone, all the kits have been taken home to be lovingly knitted and crocheted into gorgeous blankets. Even the extra hat yarn was given to 10 ambitious knitters for a few more Gilda's Club chemo caps.

So now the bad news, for now I will only purchase enough yarn for a few more kits for those In the Loopers that stopped by the Brown Bag Social today. At the next event on July 19, we will concentrate on making the blankets and there will be no kits for distribution. I may come up with a fall project if all the blankets are finished by the end of the summer. Watch the blog for updates.

BLANKETS FOR NYC'S BABY BUGGY!

We're starting a new project for a great cause--baby blankets for Baby Buggy, an organization dedicated to providing New York City’s families in need with essential equipment, clothing, and products for their infants and young children.

The patterns are easy, the yarn great for summer crafting, and our goal achievable--25 cotton baby blankets by early fall!

Patterns can be downloaded from the sidebar. We have a limited number of kits so first-come, first-served for this project. Ina will concentrate on finishing techniques as we near the end of each blanket, so make time to visit the Brown Bag Socials in September and October.

AND . . . please bring your tools this Friday . . . CROCHET NEEDLE SIZE J-10 . . . KNITTING NEEDLE US 8, 32" CIRCULAR.

OK FOLKS, we're nearing the end of the chemo cap project but for those who would like to make one more hat for Gilda's Club, we have more yarn . . . a few skeins of Lion Brand Cotton Bamboo and a few more of Blue Sky Alpacas Skinny Cotton. We'll accept finished caps until the final summer Brown Bag Social on July 17.

We had an amazing event on Friday, new faces, new challenges!

We still have 20 crochet kits and about 5 knit kits. Can we challenge knitters to learn the crochet pattern?

Remember to bring your remnants back to the next event. These fragments will be used to make second multi-colored hats.

We are all now working on the chemo hat projects, so please do not bring last season's scarves to the Brown Bag events for more help.

This Friday we begin our new project, chemo caps for members of Gilda's Club New York City! Our goal is 50 hats by the end of the season in June.

We're making two hats, both easy and created in the round (a new skill!). Both yarns are beautiful to work with and will create breathable, comfortable fabric for these hats. The knitted Skinny Striped Hat pattern from Blue Sky Alpacas uses their Skinny Cotton. The crocheted Roll Brim Hat pattern from Lion Brand uses their spectacular new Cotton Bamboo from the LB Collection.

A NEW BEGINNING

Let's begin the new year with renewed energy and focus! We're embarking on a new project, THE RED SCARF PROJECT and we have beautiful yarn and easy but interesting patterns.

CHANGES TO IN THE LOOP
In the Loop will formally meet every third Friday throughout the year at 12 noon to 2 pm. We'll take a break in August and will not meet in November or December. Evening sessions will no longer be held but I would encourage In the Loopers to organize their own after-work sessions.

We've created crafting kits which include the pattern and yarn. Each In the Looper will sign out the kit and return the finished scarf. The In the Loop patterns are clearly written with notes on tools, gauge, yarn and of course instructions and tips for success.

Instead of posting the patterns on the website, we want you to stop by the Brown Bag Socials and pick up a crafting kit.

In the Loopers still have to buy tools to create the projects. REMEMBER TO BRING TOOLS TO THE BROWN BAG SOCIALS!

Generally, I will post to this blog once a month, after the Brown Bag Social event. We will send out two email blasts, one a reminder of the upcoming of the Brown Bag Social, and the second a notice that I've posted to the blog.

We really want to triple our working members this year, from 15 to 50. Tell your friends and colleagues in the office. We will supply you with flyers to post in your office kitchens and copy rooms, and we encourage you to tell us ways we can reach out to your companies.

PROJECT 1: THE RED SCARF PROJECT: JANUARY/FEBRUARY/MARCH

We're finally knitting scarves for young people in their first year of college as part of the Orphan Foundation of America's Red Scarf Project - perfect for this cold weather! We have skinny yarn and chunky yarn, pure wool and wool blends, soft and squishy, dry and elegant. We hope you'll try it all, learn some new techniques, and have fun!

THE PATTERNS
For our crocheters, we've got the 1-2-3 Scarf, a fun and easy pattern created by Ina for In the Loop. We're using Lion Brand's Thick & Quick wool/nylon blend in four colors, fig, citron, apricot and lemongrass, that look great on both women and men.

For the knitters, we've got two patterns. The first is In the Loop Palindrome knitted with beautiful yarn donated by Sunday Knits, and the second a free pattern from Misti Alpaca using their gorgeous chunky alpaca donated by Stix-n-Stitches in Montclair.

Last Friday, October 17, In the Loopers had a surprise visit from the authors of the new Mason-Dixon Knitting Outside the Lines. Kay and Ann hung out for an hour, chatted and signed books as we worked on our season projects.

OUR GOALS

Before the busy holiday season begins, set a goal of making TWO pair of socks or TWO sets of hats & mittens. We have ONE month to accomplish this goal, so let's get busy!

The recipients-a seafaring worker or a mother and child-will appreciate the care and creativity in our warm, handknit pieces as the temperature drops outside.

Join us for our next evening session on October 29 under the palm trees in the Winter Garden where we'll continue to help each other through the projects. The final lunchtime session with Ina Braun is November 21 where she will continue to give instruction for socks knit on double pointed needles as well as assistance with the hat and mitten patterns. REMEMBER to bring your own needles (see post below for needle sizes). We still have sock, hat and mitten yarn in the stash.

We'll collect handknit pieces through December 1, 5pm, either at the In the Loop events or in our offices. We'll deliver the pieces to the two charities on Tuesday, December 2. Please make sure that each piece is completely finished-all ends woven into the fabric and lightly blocked.

We're around the office if you need assistance with a pattern, so call or email us from the blog.

A SEASON OF SOCKS

In the Loopers are working on socks this season! Our next session is FRIDAY, OCTOBER 3 AT 12PM IN THE WINTER GARDEN. We'll be under the glorious palm trees again.

Ina Braun, our intrepid knitting teacher, will conduct several SHOW AND TELLS: 1) turning the heel 2) working with double pointed needles (DPNs) and 3) knitting socks on two circular needles.

To make the most of this session, bring a sock knit through the heel flap. It's easy, once you get your stitches arranged on the DPNs, it's just straight knitting to this point. You can also start from the beginning in this session because the next meeting is in two week, October 17, perfect amount of time to work up a pair of socks to this point. Ina will repeat these tutorials.

Ina recently discovered a great sock tutorial on Purl Soho's Purlbee (click here to link). The pictures coupled with the instructions are really helpful in visualizing the sock's several sections, in particular the heel.

SOME REMINDERS TO PARTICIPANTS
Please bring your own needles to the classes. For these patterns we are using DOUBLE POINTED NEEDLES. Bamboo is highly recommended. SIZES US 2 OR US 3. These needles are affordable and a great investment. Word on the street,: everyone who learns to make socks always has a pair on the needles. Just in case, we will have a few sets on hand for use in the class.

We have some yarn, washable wool/acrylic blend from Encore called Colorspun D.K., purchased from our main charity, The Seaman's Church Institute Christmas At Sea, who distributes our handknit socks to men and women working at sea.

The exhibit includes the New York Coral Reef, a collection of beautiful pieces made by the New York Crochet Guild, Harlem Knitting Circle and many more craftspeople. What is a Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef?

What began as an experiment in modeling mathematical space, The Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef is an exquisite exhibit of handmade pieces made by hundreds of craftspeople from around the world. Previously shown at the Chicago Cultural Center, Andy Warhol Foundation Museum and other exhibit halls, the Coral Reef will be on display at our very own Winter Garden at the World Financial Center beginning April 7.

Curated by Margaret and Christine Wertheim of the Institute for Figuring, the exhibit will include parts of the Chicago Coral Reef and the Toxic Coral Reef (made of yarn from strips of plastic bags and other otherwise toxic materials).

Workshops hosted by NYU's Institute for Humanities, co-sponsors of the exhibit, have set the New York Crochet Guild and Harlem Knitting Group into creative work mode - making coral pieces that will be assembled for the first time in this exhibit.

Coral Shapes Patterns

How to make crochet coral pieces

Here are the basic instructions for crocheting the basic coral reef hyperbolic shapes.

Reef Crochet General Guidelines

Any basic crochet stitch - single, half double, double or triple - can be used in the patterns. Feel free to alternate stitches within a pattern. Feel free to change yarns as it strikes your fancy. Try using different hook sizes to achieve different looks. Work with a single strand of yarn or a combination of yarns worked together with a large hook. As long as you increase at a steady rate, you will achieve a hyperbolic form! Experiment with a variety of materials including: cut up old t-shirts, cassetter or video tape, cut up plastic bags, cut up old sweaters, use collected/discarded twine, or cut up plastic beverage bottles.

RUFFLE
Make a chain to any length. Crochet any stitch (single, half double, double or triple) back along chain increasing at a steady rate – increase one in every third stitch (stitch one in the first stitch, one in the second stitch and two in the third stitch and so on) or every fourth stitch or every ninth stitch. Increasing more frequently will make it a ruffle or “crenellate” faster, increasing less frequently will take a while for the piece to start to ruffle, but you can make a much larger piece.

Turn work at the end of the row. Make more rows as desired, changing yarns and stitches as desired, and working increased stitches as desired to shape piece.

Experimentation is encouraged!

CIRCLE
Chain about 4. Join chain with a slip stitch to form a ring. Work stitch of choice into the ring until it’s filled up. Join your last stitch to the first stitch with a slip stitch. End off, or make more rounds as desired. Make increases on subsequent rounds to shape piece. Increase at a steady rate of increase to see the piece ruffle faster.

CYLINDER
Make a chain to any length. Join chain with a slip stitch to form a ring. Work a stitch into each chain; join your last stitch to the first with a slip stitch. Continue to work in rounds, changing stitches and yarns as desired. You can alter the shape of the cylinder by occasionally working an increase (making 2 or more stitches into the same stitch) or a decrease (working 1 or more less stitches on a round).

CORKSCREW
Make a chain to any length. Crochet any stitch (single, half double, double or triple) back along chain - working 2 or more sets in each chain to make it curl. When you reach the beginning of the chain, chain again to same or different length and repeat to make additional corkscrews!

Experiment with different and multiple kinds of yarns.

Bursting forth in a colorful, crocheted panoply of loopy "kelps", curlicue "corals," and fringy "anemones," this wooly homage to Earth's endangered coral reefs is a beautiful marriage of traditional arts & crafts and hyperbolic geometry. This exhibition, featuring The Toxic Reef, New York Reef, and Chicago Reef, raises awareness about these disappearing marine treasures.

Visit the Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef at New York University's Window on Broadway, located at Broadway and East 20th Street, April 5 - May 18.

ONE MORE MONTH

Last week we mailed two large boxes full of blankets, vests, booties, and hats. Afghans for Afghans will hand carry them to Afghanistan. We'll keep you posted on their trip. Thanks to everyone for their time and effort!

We have one more month in this season, and we have some wool left. So let's continue with these projects and we'll send one more shipment to AFA at the end of March.

AFGHANS FOR AFGHANS ANNOUNCES DEADLINE

Afghans for Afghans has announced the next deadline for receiving much needed blankets, hats and vests. The charity in San Francisco must receive all finished items by February 29. In the Loop will collect the items on FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 22 in order to prepare for shipping on TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 26.

After two working sessions there are probably 1-15 blankets in process, a few hats and several vests. Feel free to email us if you've finished an item and would like to drop it off early.

We're off to an amazing start--7 blankets and 2 vests were started last night at the season's first After Five Social!

Our crocheters and knitters are racing to meet the mysterious February deadline (still unannounced by afghans for Afghans).

Happy New Year! Our first season was an incredible success with our enthusiastic group knitting and crocheting over 100 premie caps for Project Sunshine and 15 knitted "helmets" for Christmas-at-Sea.

In the Winter '08 season we are focusing on a variety of projects for one charity, afghans for Afghans, who have urgently called for blankets, hats and socks for Afghan newborns at The Cure Hospital in Kabul, one of the few hospitals to treat very sick babies in their neonatal unit. We have also added a child's vest for older Afghan children. All Afghans face a brutally cold winter this year.

ABOUT AFGHANS FOR AFGHANS
afghans for Afghans is a humanitarian and educational people-to-people project that sends hand-knit and crocheted blankets and sweaters, vests, hats, mittens, and socks to the beleaguered people of Afghanistan.

AFA works with reputable, experienced relief agencies to securely transport and distribute our hand-knit and crocheted blankets and garments to suffering Afghans. Their partners have included World Concern, Afghans 4 Tomorrow, Airline Ambassadors, International Orphan Care, Afghan Relief Organization, CURE Hospital, Church World Sevice, and Mobile Mini Circus for Children. This project is a partnership with the American Friends Service Committee, which has organized humanitarian missions for more than 80 years.

DEADLINES
Items for newborns will be sent to Afghanistan in February (exact date to be announced soon). In the Loop will send items for the group when the deadline is announced. We will send the remainder of items in March at the end of our season.

PROJECT PATTERNS & YARN
Patterns for vests, hats, and blankets have been posted on this blog (see left bar for links). We encourage you to use yarn from our stash, we have beautiful wool yarn in a variety of colors for these projects.

If anyone would like to start a project now, and would like yarn from the In the Loop stash, please email us and we'll make arrangements for you to pick up yarn from our offices.

RULES
afghans for Afghans has very strict rules. Visit their website for details, but here is a synopsis:

BLANKETS ARE URGENTLY NEEDED. THEY MUST BE A MINIMUM OF 40" X 30" (NOT SMALLER).
AFA HAS ASKED CROCHETERS TO FOCUS ON BLANKETS, AS THE FABRIC IS DENSER AND THE CROCHETING FASTER!
AVOID LACY OR AIRY PATTERNS.
FOR HATS, HEAD CIRCUMFERENCE IS 10" T0 15". CAPS NEED TO COVER EARS. EAR FLAPS AND UNDER-CHIN TIES ARE ACCEPTABLE. HATS NEED SOME STRETCH FOR COMFORT OVER FOREHEAD.
AFA DOES NOT NEED ITEMS FOR PREMIE BABIES.
USE WOOL (OR OTHER ANIMAL FIBER) TO PROVIDE MAXIMUM WARMTH IN HARSH WEATHER. SEE AFA'S WEBSITE FOR MEMO ON WOOL AND FIBER CONTENT.
AVOID WHITE AND VERY LIGHT COLORS THAT SOIL EASILY.

FINAL WINTER SEASON BROWN BAG SOCIAL

This Friday, Dec. 7, 12-2p, will be our 3rd and final official Brown Bag Social for the Winter Season. Ina Braun will be on hand once again to answer knitting and crochet questions on the charity projects. We’ll have the full collection of preemie and mariners caps that have been produced over the last two months.

Please bring in any completed or in progress caps to this meeting. We still have more yarn, so you can sit and work a bit, or take some home to complete one of two more caps. We haven’t set a final date for all pieces to be submitted, but will announce one soon. If you aren't able to drop off finished all your pieces this Friday, email us and we’ll arrange something.

NOVEMBER 28 AFTER WORK SOCIAL

This Wednesday will be our last official After Work Social for the Fall Season. We will be meeting at the usual place - the World Financial Center Winter Garden - at the usual time - 5-8pm - but not in usual spot. When you arrive you'll notice the arts > World Financial Center production team busy setting up tables for a private event around the palm trees.

Our group will meet on the BALCONY LEVEL on the south side the WINTER GARDEN. That's the area above the Godiva store. Take the escalator or grand staircase to the upper level. You'll find us at in the public seating area outside Columbus Bakery and the GAP. You can't miss it.

HAT, HATS AND MORE HATS

We began our season with designs from the Project Sunshine and Christmas-at-Sea websites. These included the pretty crocheted and knitted preemie cap patterns by Anne-Marie Brule (see our September 29 post) and the knitted mariners caps.

Our talented group of crafters from In The Loop soon became busy creating caps in a variety of shapes, sizes, styles and colors, even including a crocheted man's cap see November 11 post).

We all know what it's like to have multiple projects going at once. It's difficult sometimes to surpress the urge to start a new one before finishing the others. This is Joan's modus operandi, but we caught the momentous occasion at Friday's meeting when she actually finished not only one but three mariner's hats. Angela looks on in total amazement.

FINGER CROCHET

Last Friday we were joined by our youngest In The Loop member. We watched in amazement as this very talented 4th-grader created this hat without even using a hook or knitting needles. She crocheted it with her fingers, making up the pattern as she went along. For the finishing touch the little pom-pom was made from the thrift shop yarn she and her dad picked up that day.

Hats are not her only specialty. She was wearing a beautifully made shawl, of her own design, and she has made many other projects for herself and her little brother. It was a real pleasure having her in the group and look forward to seeing more of her creations.

DO REAL MEN WEAR CROCHET CAPS?

When we began our projects for Christmas-at-Sea, a crocheted hat for men didn't seem likely until Celia found a pattern that gives crochet a masculine twist.

The Chunky Watch Cap is a free pattern included with Lion Brand Wool Ease yarn. What's especially interesting is that the ribbed part looks knitted, but is actually a series of chain, single crochet and double crochet added after the upper cap is completed.

If you'd like to make this Watch Cap, we'll have the yarn and the pattern at the next meetings.

NOVEMBER 14 AFTER WORK SOCIAL

We meet again this Wednesday, November 14 for our second In The Loop After Work Social in the Winter Garden. Even if you stop by for just a little while, here's what you can create in one sitting (see pic below). This preemie cap was crocheted by one of Ina's students at last week's Brown Bag Social - quick, easy and so appreciated.

Bring your WIP (Work in Progress) or start a new preemie cap or sailor hat. We also enjoy seeing your other knitting or crochet projects. Now that it's getting really, really cold, wear one of your creations and inspire your fellow crafters.

Ina will be at the Brown Bag Socials to lend her expert instruction in making the charity projects for In The Loop.

We first met Ina while planning The Big Draw Scarf project this past September. She was a fabulous resource, donating bags full of beautiful yarn and getting the word out about the project. She also served as the instructor at our Craft Stops in the Winter Garden. Ina is expert not only in knitting - she designs and sells patterns for beautiful articles of clothing (that's Ina in one of her own creations), she is also an excellent instructor and holds classes in her studio in Boonton, NJ.

We invited her to tell us more about herself and her studio, so please read on.

The studio ...

I opened the studio in the summer of 2004 seemingly on the wings of faith. Experiences in knitting stores had not ended happily and I knew my passion for knitting, teaching knitting and all things creative needed to grow roots in one space. The studio adventure has grown mostly by word of mouth, but also due to the patterns I have created and the contacts I have made. I have built my website http://www.tantesophie.com/ and though not a regular “blogger” in that sense make sure I share what’s important in fibers and knitting and crochet. It’s like watching a child learn and grow.

My experience ...

I don’t remember not knitting ... I learned when in school in Germany, 3rd and 4th grades. First crochet, then knitting and other needlework, sewing and embroidery.I learned early on how to do fine handiwork and at some point much much later of course heeded the call to pursue the creative life for “work”!

It’s a big jump to walk it solo without rules from an employer, but I wouldn’t trade it for a minute. I find myself always seeking a new twist on the teaching adventure. That’s how I got to the World Financial Center when I donated some yarn for the “Big Draw” back in September.

In the loop ...

This is the perfect opportunity for me to contribute through a unique venture, expanding the reach of my experience outside the studio. It is a chance to share my fiber, knitting and crochet knowledge to help all achieve success in the projects they undertake for the chosen charities. I have to pinch myself sometimes to believe how lucky I am to have found you all.

The Knitted Preemie Cap from Project Sunshine's Project Knit is easy, quick (it only takes an hour!) and oh so cute . . . Happy Knitting!

YARN Valley Yarns Longmeadow 60% cotton/40% microfiber 117 yards
NEEDLES (circular needle method) US 4 and US 5 12" circular needles
GUAGE 6 stitches equals 1 inch using US 5 needles in stockinette
FINISHED SIZE 8" circumference 4" tall

Using size US 4 circular needles, cast on 48 stitches. Knit one row. Then, place marker and knit in the round. Knit 5 rows. Change to US 5 circular needles and continue until hat (unrolled) measures 3” inches.

Begin decrease . . .
ROW 1 *K6, k2tog. Rep from * 5 times, 42 sts remain
KNIT ALL EVEN ROWS
ROW 3 *K5, k2tog. Re from * 5 times, 36 sts remain
CHANGE TO DPN

AUTHOR NOTE Gauge is not so important, as preemie heads come in many sizes. However, if you knit very tight, it's better to knit with the next needle size up. The roll brim is good because it is adjustable. If you are worried about the roll moving too much (or not rolling at all), tack it into place in the back with a simple whip stitch when weaving in your cast-on end (Anne-Marie Brule).

IN THE LOOP IS HERE!

Welcome all crafters! After the success of The Big Draw events in September, arts>World Financial Center has created a forum for enthusiastic crafters to knit and crochet for charities. In our first season, October-December, we will collaborate with two organizations to contribute knitted and crocheted HATS, HATS AND MORE HATS to those in need within our own neighborhood.

Project Sunshine is an international organization that provides free social, educational and recreational programs to children and families living with medical challenges. Their PROJECT KNIT program creates opportunities for knitting/crocheting groups to connect with children in local hospitals. In the Loopers will create caps for babies born prematurely in neighborhood hospitals.

CHRISTMAS-AT-SEA of the Seamen’s Church Institute brings hospitality and love to deep-sea and river mariners with Christmas gifts of handmade scarves, caps, vests, helmets or socks. These items are knitted or crocheted by more than 3,500 volunteers across the country. Each year, more than 16,000 gifts are distributed. Joining this national effort, In the Loopers will knit and crochet warm hats for local seafarers.

All finished garments/gifts will be collected by arts>World Financial Center staff and distributed to each charity. Stay tuned for complete project descriptions, including patterns, dropoff deadlines, and finishing instructions.
